Anti-Aging Tips for Thinning Eyebrows

When we think about aging, the first thing that comes to mind is wrinkles. But there’s another issue that we often ignore, one that adds years to our age even way before our first wrinkle appears: thinning eyebrows.

Tips for NCAA Tournament Field on Ways to Beat Kentucky

There’s a way to beat Kentucky.

Maybe.

So far, 34 game plans to defeat the Wildcats have been put together. Every one of them fell short. There’s no shortage of theories on how to beat them — spread them out, pack the paint, shoot plenty of 3’s, attack the rim — which all sound good, but none have actually panned out for an entire game on the floor.

If someone’s going to actually throw the upset punch, now’s the time. No. 1 Kentucky (34-0) is the top overall seed going into the NCAA Tournament that begins this week, the favorite to win it all and become the first undefeated national champion in the men’s game since Indiana in 1976.

“Let me tell you, it’s a one-game shot,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said. “Foul trouble, struggle, injury, have a bad game, someone else play out of their minds, which we have seen happen with us. … It’s not best-of-five. It’s one and done.”

True, if someone makes 10 3-pointers, or scores 40, or the Wildcats all go cold simultaneously, millions of brackets will likely go poof at the same time.

Two teams took the Wildcats to overtime and six others found a way to keep the final margin within 10 points. But the Wildcats are perhaps the NCAA’s biggest favorite in years isn’t a fluke.

“They know how to win and they figure out how to win,” Missouri coach Kim Anderson said. “When they get behind they figure out how to get ahead, and obviously that’s good coaching, that’s good players, but it’s an attitude. I think that is the most impressive thing.”

So here’s three tips on how to beat them:

— LIMIT THE 3’S: Excluding the two overtime games, all six of the other teams who stayed within 10 of Kentucky for 40 minutes held the Wildcats to an average of 3.5 3-pointers in those games. That was, on average, about an eight-point savings over all other Kentucky games this season.

— GET GOOD SHOTS: Mississippi, Florida, LSU and Georgia all shot 47 percent or better in a game against Kentucky this season, losing those four games by an average of only 5.0 points. In Kentucky’s other 30 games, the average margin at games’ end was 23.1 points.

— ATTACK: In the eight “close” games, opponents shot 46 percent from 2-point range against Kentucky. In all other games, opponents shot 36.8 percent from inside the arc. And in the last three Wildcats’ games decided by 10 or fewer, teams shot a staggering 57.4 percent on 2’s.

Then again, they all lost.

“They’re pretty doggone physically imposing,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “Somebody said that Portland Trail Blazers are the only team in America that was taller.”

Shabazz Napier of the Miami Heat — he led Connecticut past Kentucky in last year’s national title game, the Wildcats’ last loss — believes defensively elite teams like Wisconsin and Virginia would have a realistic shot.

“During March Madness, it’s more about who has the best guards,” Napier said. “You have to play their game, get up a couple points and then slow it up. But it’s definitely going to be tough. I’ve seen some of their games — they’re super-talented. They’re the No. 1 team and undefeated for a reason.”

What makes Kentucky so difficult to stop is there’s no absolute key guy on their team.

The Wildcats are the most balanced team in the country. And that depth is lethal.

Sunday Vs. Saturday? Tough Turnaround After Title Games

No. 1 Kentucky’s final hurdle to carrying a perfect record into the NCAA Tournament will be to cram in one more win a few hours before everyone’s attention turns toward brackets, seeds and office pools.

It might mean one less day of rest for Wildcats than some of their top competition in the NCAAs, too.

While most of the conferences that wrapped up their tournaments this weekend finished Saturday, the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences were the only power-five leagues to wait until Sunday afternoon, shortly before the NCAA selection committee announces the pairings.

In the SEC, Kentucky plays No. 21 Arkansas in Nashville, Tennessee, and No. 6 Wisconsin faces Michigan State in Chicago for the Big Ten crown.

“Obviously, (a Saturday final) would be the best thing, but it’s above my pay grade to make that decision,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said after his Wildcats rolled past Auburn in Saturday’s semifinals. “So if we have to play on Sunday, we’ll play on Sunday and that’s fine.”

Badgers coach Bo Ryan said it’s really tough to play Sunday and then open the NCAA Tournament on Thursday.

“So what we ask for — I’m on the board of directors of the (National Association of Basketball Coaches) — we ask for if anybody is playing in a conference final on Sunday to not play until Friday,” Ryan said. “That’s been the case most of the time.”

But not every time.

Since 2004, 21 teams have entered the NCAAs with a No. 1 seed after playing a league tournament game on a Sunday. Nine of those ended up with the shorter turnaround and started on a Thursday, including Florida last season and 2012 champion Kentucky, according to STATS.

Most conferences don’t have to worry about it.

Only five of the 19 league tournaments finishing this weekend have a Sunday title game this year, according to STATS. Three of the power-five conferences — the ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 — finished play on Saturday.

The ACC joined the Saturday group this year, moving from its traditional Sunday afternoon finish that it had held since 1982 to a Saturday prime-time TV slot as part of the league’s new look with the additions of Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.

Fighting Irish coach Mike Brey said he, Pitt coach Jamie Dixon and Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim worked to sell the other ACC coaches on the merits of playing a Tuesday-to-Saturday schedule like the trio knew from their days in the old Big East. Brey said they sold the buzz — both in the arena and on TV — of playing a Friday night semifinal set followed by a Saturday night championship game, along with the fact that it would get the teams a little more time to regroup after playing in the title game.

“I would think all the coaches would think it’s a great benefit,” Brey said after his team upended No. 2 Duke in the semifinals before beating No. 19 North Carolina in the title game. “We also felt, and now that I’m in it, I sure would like another day to get my legs under me before we go into the NCAA tournament instead of playing Sunday afternoon. It would be nice.”

Mountain West Conference Commissioner Craig Thompson said it would also be a little easier on the NCAA selection committee. A committee member from 1996-99 and its chairman in 2000, Thompson said those Sunday games make the seeding “brutal” with the 6 p.m. deadline looming.

Look no further than the Big Ten final, which will finish roughly 30 minutes before the NCAA announces the 68-team field.

“The preference from a committee perspective would be to have all the games done on a Saturday night,” he said. “Not possible. Not probable. CBS has games on Sunday, ESPN and others, and they like that programming and the lead into selection, it’s perfect for TV, but it’s tough for the selection committee.”

A Wide-Open Weekend at the Valspar Championship

Jordan Spieth finished his opening round at the Valspar Championship and figured he had dug a hole. He made double bogey on the third hole, didn’t convert enough birdie chances and wound up with a 1-under 70. And then he looked at the rest of the scores and realized he was only four shots behind.

“I thought there was an 8 under out there,” Spieth when he finished Friday in even better position. “The greens are receptive. They were putting well. I just didn’t understand how I could only be four shots back.”

There’s something about Innisbrook that is making it tough on everyone, and that much was evident going into the weekend.

Brendon de Jonge made a short birdie putt on his final hole for a 69 to reach 6-under 136. It wasn’t even the best score when he finished, but he wound up with a one-shot lead when a long Friday was over. It’s the fourth time de Jonge has had a 36-hole lead on the PGA Tour without winning.

“Obviously, gives you a good chance for the weekend,” he said.

True. But it seems everyone has a chance on the Copperhead course — essentially everyone who made the cut.

Only seven shots separated de Jonge from the players who made the cut on the number, the first time the first-to-worst gap has been that small since the 2011 British Open at Royal St. George’s.

Spieth made a birdie putt from the fringe on the 18th for a 4-under 67 to match the best score of the round. Henrik Stenson, playing the Copperhead course for the first time and apparently enjoying it, made eagle on his first hole and wound up with a 70.

They were one shot behind, along with Ryan Moore (68), Kevin Streelman (69) and Derek Ernst (70).

Ernst, who had only one round in the 60s this year, ran off five straight birdies around the turn to reach 8-under par until he started missing greens, missing putts and making bogeys to fall one shot behind de Jonge.

“Starting the day, if you told me I would have shot 1 under, I would have been very happy with it,” Ernst said.

Lucas Glover had a 69 and joined Moore and Streelman as the only players to break 70s for both rounds. He was two shots behind, along with Sean O’Hair (72), Ricky Barnes (72) and Ian Poulter (70). Poulter hasn’t been to Innisbrook since 2010, and he was asked what had kept him away.

“Because I’m a buffoon,” Poulter said. “I mean, stupid. This golf course I can compete on because it’s fiddly, it’s position off the tee, small greens, need to chip it well, good pace putting when you’re above the hole. All those things I do well.”

Poulter recalls the greens being sloppy the last time he played, and so he instructed his caddie to never allow him to return. Seven holes into his pro-am round, he said he told his caddie, “What the … was I doing not being here?”

Justin Thomas (72) and Vijay Singh (70) were in the group at 3-under 139, with Luke Donald (68), Matt Kuchar (70) and Patrick Reed (68) among those four behind.

Adam Scott is about the only guy who doesn’t have a chance because he didn’t make the cut. Scott missed four putts from inside 5 feet on his way to a 75 and missed the cut by three shots. It’s the first time he had the weekend off at a golf tournament since the 2012 Byron Nelson Championship.

Pistorius Lawyers Fail in Attempt to Stop Appeal

Oscar Pistorius’ lawyers failed Friday in their attempt to stop prosecutors from appealing the double-amputee athlete’s negligent killing conviction and again seeking a murder verdict against him for shooting girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa dismissed an application by Pistorius’ defense lawyers to challenge the appeal by prosecutors, who want Pistorius convicted of the more serious charge of murder for shooting Steenkamp multiple times in a bathroom in his home in 2013.

“The order that I grant in this matter is to strike off the application,” the black-robed Masipa said in her ruling on Friday, dismissing the defense’s application.

In December, Masipa granted prosecutors permission to take the case to South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal and challenge her own ruling to acquit Pistorius of murder and find him guilty instead of a lesser charge comparable to manslaughter. Pistorius’ lawyers were arguing that Masipa should not have allowed that appeal.

The Olympian and multiple Paralympic champion is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for culpable homicide, or negligent killing. The 28-year-old Pistorius could be eligible for release from the jail in the capital Pretoria in August to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.

If prosecutors succeed in their appeal against the culpable homicide conviction in the Supreme Court of Appeal and have it upgraded to murder, Pistorius would face a minimum of 15 years in jail.

Masipa, who presided over Pistorius’ seven-month murder trial and the start of the appeal process by prosecutors, made her latest ruling after a short court session in Johannesburg. Pistorius’ trial was held in another courthouse in Pretoria.

Masipa heard arguments by Barry Roux, Pistorius’ chief defense lawyer at trial, and Gerrie Nel, the chief prosecutor.

Roux argued prosecutors had “mistakenly” been given permission to appeal against Masipa’s initial trial verdict. Nel said there was no basis for this application by the defense, which wanted a “never-ending case” to prevent it from going to the appeal court.

Pistorius’ trial now looks set to be reviewed by a panel of judges at the Supreme Court of Appeal, which sits in the central city of Bloemfontein. No date has been given for that appeal but cases can sometimes take two years to reach the court, legal experts have said.

Man Proposes in World Scavenger Hunt

After Amy Linville completed her master’s degree, she learned that her boyfriend, Brett Arnold, had a huge surprise for her.

That surprise would take her on an overseas journey more than 5,000 miles away.

“Brett and I have been together for eight years,” she said. “As a graduation gift he told me I had to go on a scavenger hunt. We’ve traveled the world together, so it makes sense that he would do this.”

Arnold, 30, accompanied Linville to the top of Green Mountain in their Lakewood, Colorado, neighborhood where she found a note telling her to pack her things.

“I wasn’t really excited because Brett’s always joking and messing with me,” she told ABC News. “He handed me a one-way ticket to Tokyo and a map. I was leaving in 13 hours.”

The following day, Arnold drove Linville, 28, to the airport where hours later she landed in Tokyo to search for her next clue.

“Everything was in Japanese and all I had was a map to a friend’s apartment that lives there,” Linville said. “The clue at the apartment said that another friend would fly in to deliver my next clue.”

In the meantime, Linville said, Arnold gave her a list of things to see and do while in the country.

“I was in Japan for seven days,” she said. “I went to see the snow monkeys, I went to the ‘Robot Restaurant,’ I ate tons of sushi, and I did a pub crawl. I’m definitely a free spirit.”

Following the close of her Tokyo trip, Linville was greeted by an old friend, who presented her with her next clue.

“I flew to Barcelona and Brett put me into a hotel that overlooked a cliff that’s on the coast in San Sebastian,” she said. “I was kind of depressed that day because it was Christmas and I knew Brett was with family.”

While she figured he’d eventually join her, Linville went ahead and followed her next instruction to hike to a peninsula overlooking the ocean.

“The clue was a picture of Brett standing on this point of the island,” she said. “It’s raining, its cold, and I couldn’t find my next clue after that.

“So, I started hiking down and Brett was hiking up at the same time. I was so shocked to see him and I still didn’t get what was going on. I said, ‘Where’s my next clue?"”

At that moment, Linville said, Arnold pulled out a ring and asked her to marry him.

“He said, ‘You’ve come this far and I hope you’re willing to go on another adventure with me,” she recalled.

“I’m still in shock. It’s hard to tell the story to people. The girl-reaction is, ‘Shut up, no way!’ and the guy-reaction is, ‘Be quiet before my girlfriend hears you!"”

The couple plans to wed in October on a boat in Florida.

Blind Golden Retriever 'Smiley' Warms Hearts as Therapy Dog

A golden retriever named “Smiley” is living up to his name as a therapy dog who brightens the days of patients and nursing home residents in the small town of Stouffville, Canada.

Smiley was born without eyes, but is still able to work as a St. John’s Ambulance service dog in Ontario. The dog’s owner, Joanne George, rescued the dog from a puppy mill, when he was about 1 or 2 years old.

“He was very scared, [the dogs] had never been out of that barn,” George recalled, adding that Smiley quickly bonded with another one of his dogs, a deaf Great Dane named Tyler.

“Tyler was so bouncy and crazy and happy go lucky and [Smiley] turned into the same dog,” George said. “He came out from underneath the tables where he was always hiding.”

George said seeing Smiley interact with crowds made her realize he would be a perfect therapy dog. She now brings the dogs to hospitals and schools in the area and says the dog almost always brightens people’s days.

She said at one nursing home, she realized how even a small visit with Smiley could make people happy.

“There was this man Teddy, [he had] no speech, no communication at all,” George said of one memorable nursing home resident. “[The staff] had never seen Teddy smile before.”

PHOTO: Joanne George says Smiley, the service dog, has become a favorite therapy dog in her area.

But once Smiley came up to Teddy, George said the staff was amazed. “[Teddy] smiled when Smiley got into his vision,” George said

George said after caring for Smiley for 10 years, she has learned a lot about how to care for blind dogs.

“Somebody through St. John’s Ambulance is wanting to adopt a dog that’s blind,” George said. “I told her all those things don’ t be his eyes, don’t run his life, don’t’ keep him in a bubble.”

She said it’s key for Smiley to figure out how to get around on his own. George said Smiley is mostly able to get around on his own without too much difficulty.

“Does he bump into things? Of course, he does. But he does it very carefully,” George said, noting the dog’s “high” steps when he walks. “He’s feeling with his feet.”
